Toxic Home Front

Apr 17 2012

Senator Warner has pressed the Navy and Lincoln Military Housing to fix issues with mold in housing for military families since first becoming aware of the problem in December. So far our office has worked with about 60 Hampton Roads families, the Navy, and Lincoln to repair homes and remediate concerns.

"All of us are grateful for the quick and effective efforts of Virginia Beach emergency personnel to assist dozens of residents who sustained damage or loss.

"What is truly remarkable are the multiple stories of neighbors and bystanders who sprang into action immediately, without regard to their own safety, to assist our military pilots and help our first responders. Virginians have a proud tradition of strong support for our military, and the men and women who serve in Hampton Roads are our neighbors, friends and family members.

"By all accounts, this flight crew took extraordinary action in an effort to minimize casualties on the ground, and all of us are grateful for that. I expect this accident will be thoroughly investigated by Navy officials, and I will continue to monitor events as they develop."

Senator Warner has launched a contest to pick a cover photo of Virginia for his Facebook page by asking for submissions from his more than 16,500 followers. Facebook, the popular social media tool, will be transitioning all pages to their new Timeline format on Friday, March 30. As part of the new format, all pages must include a large “cover photo.”

Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Senator Mark Warner convened the hearing aboard the USS Kearsarge (the first hearing aboard a ship in more than 50 years!) to learn more about energy conservation efforts in the armed forces.
A gasoline-powered generator can supply electricity to a remote U.S. Marine outpost in Afghanistan, powering everything from laptops to communications equipment. And the noise from that generator can be a dead giveaway to Taliban forces searching for Americans. So when Marines tout the effectiveness of quiet, solar-powered generators, it's not because they feel all warm and fuzzy about Earth Day.

In his State of the Union Address, President Obama called on Congress to pass an agenda that helps start-ups and small businesses succeed. We have already introduced a plan that shares his goals. It's called the Startup Act. Research conducted by the Kauffman Foundation and others has consistently shown that companies less than five years old accounted for nearly all net job creation in our economy over the past three decades.
